Many people get caught up, or hung up on titles, cliche's and phrases. The three-in-one can describe many things. It's not unique in itself. I once bought a child a toy that was three wooden boxes in one. When you open the box another one is inside, then another one even smaller inside of that one. It's useful for learning size ratio and how to open, close, put in and take out. "Three-In-One" can also be found quite readily in the printer market today. Printing, copying, and scanning, all three in the same device. It is very efficient, cost effective and found in most inkjet/desk jet printers.
However, the subject of this article is not about printers and toys. Our purpose is to reveal the connection between the triunity of man and God and how The three-in-one reveals the triunity of God. Let's focus on this for the next few minutes.
First, we must be clear on the fact that I stand on the word of God as my foundation of truth, that the earth and every thing in it was created by a perfect and awesome creator who is the beginning and the end. He is the Supreme Being who formed the earth just perfectly for His living creation. We could not have possibly be 'evolved' from lower life forms, and then somehow emerge to have dominion over all the fish, fowl, cattle, all the earth (air, trees, water, mountains, etc), and all creeping things as intelligent, creative, spiritual multi-dimensional beings. Yes, it is our Creator who made us to reflect Him from the very beginning of the creation of mankind.
...That being said let's look at Genesis 1:26-27
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth. 27-So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
"Let Us" and "our" in verse 26 is referring to God which in the Hebrew means Elohim showing God as plural, the supreme being of the Godhead. We will go more into that later.
The word image, according to Webster's dictionary, is used to describe a representation or similitude of a person or thing formed into a substance. So, man is made in the representation or similitude of God formed into a substance, in this case, flesh and blood, not wood or stone.
Let's review the formation of man. Gen. 2:7
"And the Lord God formed man and created woman from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
Man has three elements of his body in one, created in the sixth day of creation. Man is three-in-one.
Element #1:Body "...the dust of the ground"...God formed (Made; shaped; molded; planned; arranged; combined; enacted; constituted) from the dust (Hebrew -‛âphâr (as powdered or gray; hence clay, earth, mud: - ashes, dust, earth, ground, morter, powder, rubbish).
Mankind as a species has the same structural shape, form of God His creator. The outward frame is the body that includes flesh, bones, ligaments, tendons, nerves, muscle, fat and physical organs. The physical body by itself cannot function with out two other vital elements. Let's go back to verse 7:
Element #2: Spirit "...breath of life..." YAHWEH breathed (Heb. Naphach-to puff, blow, breath, give up, cause to lose [life]) into his nostrils, the breath (a puff, that is, wind, vital breath, divine inspiration, intellect :- blast, (that breathed), inspiration, soul, spirit) of life;
Element #3 Soul:..."living Soul"...man became alive, a living, breathing soul (Heb. ne-fesh; literally a breathing creature that has intellect, mind, will, pleasure, desire)
Putting it all together we see that the three elements of body, spirit (God's breath, spiritual part of man), and soul (mind, will and emotions) were given to man at creation. YAHWEH gave up a part of himself so that we could look like, create like, exist in bodily form like Him! How awesome is that. What a privilege we have to be created by God to have dominion over everything he made!
Psalm 8:6-9 Thou hast made him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou has put all things under his feet; 7-All sheep and oxen, yea and the beasts of the field; 8-the fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passes through the paths of the seas. 9 -Oh Lord our God how excellent is thy name in all the earth!!
So, we've just established the triunity of man. Man can be said to be three-in-one. When we die a physical death, our bodies go back to the dust it came from but our spirit and soul (the essence of who we are) returns back to God our maker! When you return back to Him you are a living breathing soul with a form of a body made of Spirit substance, not flesh and blood, an eternal spirit being. Which also means that our spirit body is in the same shape and look of our physical body, but because it is spirit it is eternal, perfect, never to decay or grow old!
Now, let's learn from scripture what GOD is like. Remember we are made in His image and likeness. We could go into great detail here and take pages and pages of information on who God is and how He looks etc. But I will just focus on the tri-unity of God by which man was created in likeness.
This ends the first part of How The "Three-In-One" Reveals The Triunity of God. Stay tuned for part II!
