Knowing The Ten Commandments and obeying them is very important. You can find them In Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5, this is where God gave Moses his servant these commandments on Mount Sinai. God made a covenant with ancient Israel that was based on them keeping his commandments.
We begin in Exodus 19:3 where Moses is on Mount Sinai and Israel is encamped down below. God is talking to Moses and telling him what to say to the House of Jacob and tell the Children of Israel:
v-4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself. v-5 now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine. v-6 and ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel. v-7 And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the Lord commanded him.
As we read further in verse 8, we see that Israel agreed to do all that the Lord asked them to do. Moses then returns to the top of Mount Sinai and receives the ten commandments on the two tablets of stone, written by God's finger.
After Moses received the ten commandments from God, he had to teach them to Israel so that they would know what they were, and how to follow them in the land that God was bringing them to posses. Israel had come out of Egypt and still were practicing some of the idolatrous ways they learned from the Egyptians. As we read in Deuteronomy 4:3, God destroyed all the men in Israel who were worshiping Ba-al-pe-or from among them. God wanted Israel to be a nation holy unto him. Not serving other gods, and following the laws and practices of the nations round about them.
By keeping God's commandments they would be a great, wise and understanding people in the sight of the nations round about them.
So God wanted Israel to teach his laws from generation to generation as an everlasting covenant. If Israel hearkened diligently unto the voice of the Lord God , to observe and to do his commandments and diligently seek him , God would set them high above all the nations of the earth, they would be greatly blessed. If Israel turned away from God and did not hearken unto his voice to observe and to do his commandments, curses would come upon them. You can read a list of the blessings and curses in (Deuteronomy 28).
Some people may say, "do I have to keep God's ten commandments today? didn't Jesus Christ come and do away with God's commandments.
God's commandments still apply to those of his people today, and we still have to keep them, and no, Jesus Christ did not do away with the ten commandments.
Jesus says In Matthew 5:17-19
17) Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the Prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. 18) For verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Let's also read what Jesus says in:
Matthew 22:34-40-But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. v-35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, v-36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? v-37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. v-38 This is the first and great commandment. v-39 And the second is like unto it, thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. v-40 on these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
We have read how Jesus summed it up, love towards God and love towards your neighbor. Lets go to Deuteronomy 5 where the ten commandments are.
The first four of the ten commandments show us how to love God.
1-Thou shalt have none other gods before me.
2-Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:
3-Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me. and showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.
4-Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
The last six of the ten commandments show love toward your neighbour.
5-Keep the Sabbath day to sanctify it, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee. Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou.
6-Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
7-Thou shalt not kill.
8-Neither shalt thou commit adultery.
9-Neither shalt thou steal.
10-Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour. Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservants, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour's.
These are the ten commandments and we should keep them today!
